Surviving the Process
Quick tips for Parents
Don't hover! Support your child, but don’t take over the process. Although you may feel the need to be involved in every step of the way, it's important to understand that this process is for your student to overcome. Hovering will cause more harm than good.
Communicate with your child! As stressed as you are, imagine how your child feels. Try not to overwhelm your student with your concerns. Instead listen to your student and understand their perspective.
Seek the best fit for your child! The academic environment is not the only factor to consider; location and social settings will affect them. Feeling comfortable and happy is key for success. The goal is for students to thrive not just survive. Best-fit is essential for ensuring completion.
Set realistic expectations! Be in agreement regarding distance, location, and cost. This way, no one is disappointed.
Give your students time to explore majors. Exploring early on in the process prevents costly mistakes later on.
Get help! Seeking advice and aid from a professional counselor can transform this overwhelming process into an enjoyable experience.
Quick tips for Students
1. Be honest; universities want to know who you really are!
2. Know your deadlines; falling behind just adds to an already stressful process.
3. Prepare; have all your documents ready, start your essays early, and don’t wait for the last minute to ask your school counselor and teachers for a letter of recommendation.
4. Have a support system; being able to rely on friends, family, and mentors can only help with the process.
4. Reach out to admissions when you have a question no one can answer. Admissions officers are often delighted to hear from students.
5. Don’t underestimate the importance of your essays; these can make or break your application.
6. Enjoy the process. Although college applications require immense dedication, the admissions process is one of the most rewarding and enriching experiences. As spring rolls around, all your hard work will pay off as you begin planning the new chapter in your academic career.
